Sai is a pretty new character to the manga Naruto, his first appearance is in chapter 281. Not even his real name is known yet; he was given the name Sai by Danzou. He is assigned to team up with Naruto, Sakura, and Yamato (Yamato is taking Kakashi's place at the moment) to go on a mission to find Sasuke.

Naruto and Sakura really don't seem to like Sai when they frist set off and Sai seems to have other motives for being put in team 7. As time goes on and as they get closer to their goal Sai's true colors start to show when they finally come face to face with Orochimaru and Kabuto. It seems he was there only because Danzou has sent him their to join up with Orochimaru. Or so is seems.

Sai's mission and it's full objective are revealed in chapter 305. He was to kill Sasuke because of his supposed danger to Konoha, but after realizing the bond between him and Naruto, he decides against this, instead stating that he wishes to protect that bond by rescuing him from Orochimaru.
